40 years after the infamous Tate-LaBianca murder case of August 1969, Creation Books presents a definitive account of those killings and their perpetrators, the Charles Manson Family.

In this revised and updated edition of THE SHADOW OVER SANTA SUSANA, investigative journalist Adam Gorightly takes his readers on a black magic carpet ride from the Hollywood “Beautiful People” scene of the late 60′s through to the vast desert landscapes of a Death Valley gone mad – with all the love-ins and murderous creepy-crawls that happened along the way. He also investigates a number of conspiracy theories, both old and original, about the Manson case. The result is the most complete document published to date on Manson and his “Love and Terror Cult”, an illustrated kill-bible for the coffee-tables of all self-respecting true crime buffs, counter-culture freaks and aspiring teenage satanists.

Expanded from its original release in 2001, this controversial “40 year anniversary” edition includes new material on Manson and family along with over 200 rare photographs.

“The single greatest book about crazy Charlie and his hippie chicks!” Michael Marinacci,

author of Mysterious California

“For years I’ve had a gnawing feeling that there was more going on with the Charles Manson Tate/LaBianca murders than ever made it into the public consciousness. Now a book has been released that, more than any other before it, fits many of the pieces together in a case that still has us interested forty years later.” Victor Thorn, wingtv.net

THE SHADOW OVER SANTA SUSANA, published by Creation Books, www.creationbooks.com, 7 X 10 inches, 192 pages. $19.95.

ADAM GORIGHTLY

An active contributor to the ‘zine revolution of the late ’80s and early ’90s, Adam Gorightly’s byline was a familiar sight in many cutting-edge mags of the period where he sharpened his literary teeth penning articles on the paranormal, conspiracies, and fringe culture. Adam’s explorations into these arcane waters eventually led, in October 2001, to the first edition of The Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind Control and the Manson Family Mythos followed by The Prankster and the Conspiracy: The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture (November 2003); The Beast of Adam Gorightly: Collected Rantings 1992–2004 and James Shelby Downard’s Mystical War (November 2008)

His articles have appeared in numerous publications such as The Excluded Middle, UFO Magazine, Paranoia, SteamShovel Press, and FourTwoFour, the largest soccer magazine in Great Britain. Adam has lectured across the US. His rant, “Were the Early UFO Contactees Ritual Magicians?” was presented at The Retro UFO Space Convention in April 2006; The Roswell UFO 60th Anniversary Festival in July 2007 and The League Of Western Fortean Intermediatists Mini-Con in October 2008 in Los Angeles.
Jessica Dalva “The Devouring of Dominic”

Jessica Dalva loves all things dusty and weathered – whether Victorian portraits of unhappy children or broken fence posts, abandoned and splintered. A mixture of sculpture, painting, fog, driftwood and crows, Dalva’s show draws mostly from the story of a sister who loses her brother to mysterious monsters thick in the fog and how she compensates for her loss by collecting piles of things she doesn’t need. “It seems to me that it is a common affliction these days to feel the need to acquire objects, or tasty treats, or gambling debts, in order to fill the spaces left behind by mysteries we cannot solve, loves lost or dreams abandoned; this show will look at how various people deal with inadequacies in their lives,” states Dalva. Dalva grew up in Northern California and recently graduated from Otis College of Art and Design with a BFA in illustration. www.jessicadalva.com

Scott Holloway

Holloway’s current work centers on the holy relics of Saints and biblical figures as highly detailed anatomical icons. Holloway fuses these images with passages from the Bible and text from medical treatise, sprinkled with a bit of Surrealism. Working with oil on panel as well as mixed media, Holloway’s pieces conjure up images torn from an old anatomy book, an icon that emerged from an unknown religion and skulls that remind us of our own mortality. Born in Bellingham, Massachusetts in 1969, Holloway discovered his talent at an early age. Encouraged by his teachers to pursue an art career, he explored realism in the tradition of the Northern Renaissance. His efforts won him several awards for his work in the late 1980s. In the 1990s, Holloway spent four years studying the oil painting techniques of the Old Masters at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. Since then, Holloway has been working steadily from his studios in Worcester, and exhibiting his work at area galleries as well LA, NYC, Berlin and London. “I love to work with concepts. I have also created a Madonna and Child series. These works at first appear to the viewer as religious icons. But if you look closer, you will notice I have included an underlying ‘femme fatale’ theme using a lot of ironic symbolism” states Holloway. www.scott-holloways-artwork.blogspot.com

Misato Otake “Murdered by Beauty”

In her work Misato Otake expresses her affinity with the cute characters of Japanese pop culture and the tattoo, street art and rock ‘n ‘ roll music of contemporary Los Angeles. “Murdered by Beauty” tells of a tragic place where girls use their power of attraction to fulfill desire in a society where sex suppresses and ultimately destroys life and nature. Working with pen and ink, Otake loves to incorporate fine outlines in her acrylic and panel paintings. Otake has included among the 10 pieces in “Murdered by Beauty”, her first sculpture, created from Super Sculpy, wires, wood, and beads. Born in Japan, Otake moved to Los Angeles to study art at the age of 15 and currently works as a graphic designer and freelance illustrator. www.missileotake.com

Jasmine Worth “Inner Child”

Jasmine Worth crafts scenes from fairytales gone awry—swirling seamlessly between the sweet and surreal, inevitably dipping into the valley of the morbid. Jasmine studied formally at Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California, and earned her BFA from the Laguna College of Art and Design. While she possesses the credentials, the product of her toils clearly pours from the cobwebbed corners of her mind, not the classroom. Her paintings—a cabaret of vibrant hues—are a blend of soft textures and colorful characters, juxtaposed against gloomy themes. Created in her home of San Diego, Jasmine combines dark influences and subtle-yet-serious undertones with raw artistic talent and a rarely seen creativity. Her work exudes a strong bearing of individuality, manifested through characters that speak almost vocally and give a new element of depth to an otherwise two dimensional medium. Each scene tells a story and every story is as diverse in emotion as it is in appearance. “Inner Child” is based on the concept of the inner child manifest as an independent entity. Worth has recently switched her medium from gouache to oil. “Inner Child” will be the largest collection of her oil works to date. Worth’s is collected by the likes of curator/collector Gino Joukar, artist Bibi Davidson and many others. www.jasmineworth.com

Feral House and Process invite you to an early Winter Solstice Celebration and book signing at La Luz de Jesus on Thursday, December 11th. Join us as we gather to honor the darkest day of the year and the rebirth of the sun with ritual book signings and celebration of our latest, greatest titles. Meet our authors, tip back some mead, and get special holiday discounts on signed copies of our books!

This event is the release and book signing party for “Dope Menace: The Sensational World of Drug Paperbacks” by Stephen J. Gertz, “Dope Menace” collects together hundreds of fabulously lurid and collectible covers in color, from xenophobic turn-of-the century tomes about the opium trade to the beatnik glories of reefer smoking and William S. Burroughs’ Junkie to the spaced-out psychedelic ’60s and of course the gonzo paranoia brought on by Hunter S. Thompson in the ’70s, when anything was everything. Author Stephen J. Gertz is a well-regarded authority on antiquarian books and contributor to Feral House’s Sin-A-Rama, an award-winning visual history of sleaze paperbacks from the sixties. Annie Nocenti, longtime editor of High Times magazine, offers an informative foreword. Gertz will be in attendance to sign his new book.

We will also be celebrating these following titles with many of the authors present to sign books and answer all your questions:

In an era when popular culture shuns the mysterious & sacred for the garish & over-exposed, Alexandra Gibson cultivates a deeper, innate ideal of sexuality and eros. Her work expresses a genuine desire to explore the individual, to extract and expose the mystery of the spirit.

One could describe her style as a cross-fertilization of social realism and erotica, a distinct departure from the increasingly commonplace www-erotica that relies upon a simple algebra of nudity and exploitive pose. Gibson’s muses bare themselves in front of her camera physically and psychologically, exposing a nakedness that is far more than nudity. She documents the very immediate, captures the moment of permission, of acquiescence. When viewing these images one can almost hear the subject exhale, a thumping pulse, the hum of raw lust like electricity.

In her first book “From the Outside In,” Gibson offers her audience visions of passion that are unexpected and unique: there are men and women entwined as serpents, spells inscribed with razor and blood, nymphs tamed by rope round slender neck, and near spectral figures emerging from inky black. The body is a tableau to Gibson and she has the distinct ability to emphasize its eroticism through the shooting of the specific (i.e., portraiture) or through the revelation of its more anonymous, seductive architecture. This ability to mate the stark and secret recalls for the onlooker the work of Brassai and Arbus, Man Ray and Mark, Evans and Witkin.

Gibson’s work has appeared in countless publications including Rolling Stone, the New York Times, the L.A. Weekly, and Curve. Her photography has been shown in a list of equally prestigious locations: the California State Capitol, the corporate offices of Hewlett-Packard, the Advocate Gallery, & the Helen-Pittman Gallery in Detroit, MI. Most recently, Gibson traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico to study under photography legend Mary Ellen Mark.

La Luz de Jesus Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of new works by Gibson in conjunction with the release & signing of her book. Limited edition archival prints will be on display & available for purchase. Also, as part of this special event Gibson will be erecting one of her famous live photo stages for a live erotic photo shoot in the gallery – an event not to be missed!

Alexandra Gibson From the Outside In: $35.00, Hardcover, 40pp, published and distributed by Alexandra Gibson, www.iwillshootyourhead.com, ISBN: 978-0-9817994-2-1

Alex de Leon “He Spilled His Guts Out One Too Many Times”

Alex de Leon‘s art explores symbolic images of contemporary life. Rhythmical natural patterns interact with the subject matter of his work, balancing ironic images with the aesthetic language of art. De Leon works with enamel on steel, making high gloss images with a printmaking feel to them. His current works emanate from personal experience and observations as he explores and reflects addiction, consumption, lying, repetition and insomnia. “He Spilled His Guts Out One Too Many Times” will also feature de Leon’s extremely detailed line drawings. De Leon earned his BFA in Print Making from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1983, before establishing his studio in San Antonio. He has exhibited extensively across Texas and elsewhere in the United States, in individual and group exhibitions, and has also contributed design for film and television. De Leon has been awarded the London Studio Program grant and the International AIR Program grants from ArtPace: A Foundation for Contemporary Art, San Antonio.

Max Grundy “Antlophobia”

Max Grundy “Retro Futurism”

“The most effective images to motivate people and get a reaction are images of fear,” states painter, illustrator and graphic designer Max Grundy. Inspired by 1940′s and 1950′s B-movie, sci-fi and propaganda visuals, Grundy believes that the images of world destruction, alien invasion and communism which were predominate during the WW2 and post-war decades still have a huge influence on the phobias of contemporary society. His interest in vintage 40′s/50′s era poster design is major inspiration on his art. He admires its use of unusual perspective, limited color palette, dramatic text and design to create maximum effect. Flat shapes and clean design are conducive with the time period of influence. He believes this style has the ability to reach out and grab a viewer because of its economical graphic quality. Grundy currently works with enamel on aluminum panel and feels this media is the most consistent with the subject matter. “We call this particular style retro futurism,” states Grundy. His works have been collected by the likes of Metallica’s James Hetfield, producer J.J. Abrams, Hell’s Angels founder Sonny Barger and “Overhauling” host Chris Jacobs. With a B.A. in Illustration and a Master’s degree in painting, drawing and art history, Grundy lives and works in Glendale California as a full time artist.

P.J. FIDLER – “The Permutation Generator”

PJ Fidler’s “The Permutation Generator” reflects the concept of metamorphism – sacrificing what you are to become something else. The paintings focus on life, love, sex and death and how each of these experiences transform each one of us. Deeply influenced by his childhood surroundings in a small farm community in Central California, his art is an unfolding of nonlinear narratives. Commonly comprised of animal imagery, landscapes and religious iconography, Fidler’s work reflects his love of Flemish paintings, vintage children’s books, and contemporary graphic design using mixed media on wood and canvas. The results, with their mixture of adolescent archetypes and the dark psychological aspects of the human condition, are often surreal, ambiguous, and yet very much familiar. Fidler studied illustration at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. www.pjfidler.com

“P.J. Fidler’s pieces are exercises in exuberance. The macabre and the merry co-exist in a frenzy of color. Such a treat.” — Pam Grossman, www.phantasmaphile.com

JASON HOUCHEN – “Fallen Trees Spread No Seeds”

Through his wood burnings, sculptures, mixed media and paintings, Jason Houchen fuses his Midwestern roots with his love of classical folk art, street art and pop surrealism. Spirits and spirituality, antiquity and memories freely flow from his extremely detailed works. “Fallen Trees Spread No Seeds” has a “how the west was stolen” theme, created with wood, a soldering iron, vintage cigar bands and stained glass. Describing himself as an “urban folk artist,” Houchen’s art is collected by artists and art dealers and can be found in the private collections of Liz McGrath, SHAG, Glenn Barr, Miles Thompson, Greg Escalante, Jan Corey Helford, Billy Shire and Annie Adjchavanich. Houchen received his BFA from the University of Missouri and is currently working on his masters and teaching in Illinois. www.jasonhouchen.com

MALLEUS
Malleus is an artistic and graphic rock-devoted power-trio from Italy that creates handmade limited edition silkscreened posters for the celebration of gigs and events. Their work raises the visual side of Music to an Art level. The trio’s catalogue represents an ongoing study of the female form with roots in mythology, folklore, Renaissance, Symbolism, and Neoclassicism, continuing all the way up to the modern, postmodern and contemporary periods. The idea of the Muse, a central artistic concept as long as history has been history, is the fulcrum of Malleus’ poetics and aesthetics. Malleus’ creative process involves different instruments and methods, but the manual art gesture remains their main cardinal point. Malleus has created posters for bands such as: Aphex Twin, Beck, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Blue Cheer, Blues Explosion, Brant Bjork, the Chemical Brothers, the Cure, Current 93, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dresden Dolls, Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Mars Volta, Melvins, Motorpsycho, Monster Magnet, Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Nine Inch Nails, Om, The Prodigy, Sigur Ros, Queens of the Stone Age, Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Isis, Tool, Turbonegro, Ufomammut and many more. Malleus has been present in exhibitions from Atlanta to Philadelphia, from Roma to Rio de Janeiro, from Milano to Antwerpen. Several of their works are included in The Art of Modern Rock the gig poster bible by Paul Grushkin and Dennis King.

THE HAMMER OF GOD
The Hammer of God includes numerous Malleus gig posters (see above list), editorial illustrations and album covers. Comments are written by artists, collectors and friends including Paul Grushkin and Dennis King (The Art of Rock and the Art of Modern Rock), Firehouse, David Tibet (Current 93), Jermaine Rogers, Alan Forbes, Justin Hampton, Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls), Al Cisneros (Om), Brant Bjork, and many more. “The Hammer of God” is published by Supernaturalcat, $33 Euro, soft-cover, 112 pages, 23 x 33 cm, ISBN: 978-88-903692-0-9

The trio will be signing books and will also have limited edition prints for sale.

How many Chumps, Mongers and CI-Boys does one person need? One of each naturally! And two of the coolest ones! So why do I have three Bosco’s, four Jerome’s, and still no Boxing Mookie? Join us at Wacko on Saturday, October 18th for our second ever Toy Swap and Sale. Bring your repeat blind box toys and trade them with other collectors for the toys you really want. We’ve also got a fresh supply of toys from kidrobot, Tokidoki, Strange Co., Mindstyle and all your other favorites. When you’re done trading you can always buy more toys. So come on down, we’ll be in the parking lot behind Wacko servin’ up punch and cookies. Let the trading begin!
