Feral House and Process invite you to an early Winter Solstice Celebration and book signing at La Luz de Jesus on Thursday, December 11th. Join us as we gather to honor the darkest day of the year and the rebirth of the sun with ritual book signings and celebration of our latest, greatest titles. Meet our authors, tip back some mead, and get special holiday discounts on signed copies of our books!

This event is the release and book signing party for “Dope Menace: The Sensational World of Drug Paperbacks” by Stephen J. Gertz, “Dope Menace” collects together hundreds of fabulously lurid and collectible covers in color, from xenophobic turn-of-the century tomes about the opium trade to the beatnik glories of reefer smoking and William S. Burroughs’ Junkie to the spaced-out psychedelic ’60s and of course the gonzo paranoia brought on by Hunter S. Thompson in the ’70s, when anything was everything. Author Stephen J. Gertz is a well-regarded authority on antiquarian books and contributor to Feral House’s Sin-A-Rama, an award-winning visual history of sleaze paperbacks from the sixties. Annie Nocenti, longtime editor of High Times magazine, offers an informative foreword. Gertz will be in attendance to sign his new book.

We will also be celebrating these following titles with many of the authors present to sign books and answer all your questions:

“Dark Mission: The Secret History of Nasa” by Richard C. Hoagland and  Mike Bara

“Frezno” by Tony Stamolis

“The Intimate Sex Lives of Famous People” by David Wallechinsky and Amy Wallace

In an era when popular culture shuns the mysterious & sacred for the garish & over-exposed, Alexandra Gibson cultivates a deeper, innate ideal of sexuality and eros. Her work expresses a genuine desire to explore the individual, to extract and expose the mystery of the spirit.

One could describe her style as a cross-fertilization of social realism and erotica, a distinct departure from the increasingly commonplace www-erotica that relies upon a simple algebra of nudity and exploitive pose. Gibson’s muses bare themselves in front of her camera physically and psychologically, exposing a nakedness that is far more than nudity. She documents the very immediate, captures the moment of permission, of acquiescence. When viewing these images one can almost hear the subject exhale, a thumping pulse, the hum of raw lust like electricity.

In her first book “From the Outside In,” Gibson offers her audience visions of passion that are unexpected and unique: there are men and women entwined as serpents, spells inscribed with razor and blood, nymphs tamed by rope round slender neck, and near spectral figures emerging from inky black. The body is a tableau to Gibson and she has the distinct ability to emphasize its eroticism through the shooting of the specific (i.e., portraiture) or through the revelation of its more anonymous, seductive architecture. This ability to mate the stark and secret recalls for the onlooker the work of Brassai and Arbus, Man Ray and Mark, Evans and Witkin.

Gibson’s work has appeared in countless publications including Rolling Stone, the New York Times, the L.A. Weekly, and Curve. Her photography has been shown in a list of equally prestigious locations: the California State Capitol, the corporate offices of Hewlett-Packard, the Advocate Gallery, & the Helen-Pittman Gallery in Detroit, MI. Most recently, Gibson traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico to study under photography legend Mary Ellen Mark.

La Luz de Jesus Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of new works by Gibson in conjunction with the release & signing of her book. Limited edition archival prints will be on display & available for purchase. Also, as part of this special event Gibson will be erecting one of her famous live photo stages for a live erotic photo shoot in the gallery – an event not to be missed!

Alex de Leon “Then the Party Started”

Alex de Leon “He Spilled His Guts Out One Too Many Times”

Alex de Leon’s art explores symbolic images of contemporary life. Rhythmical natural patterns interact with the subject matter of his work, balancing ironic images with the aesthetic language of art. De Leon works with enamel on steel, making high gloss images with a printmaking feel to them. His current works emanate from personal experience and observations as he explores and reflects addiction, consumption, lying, repetition and insomnia. “He Spilled His Guts Out One Too Many Times” will also feature de Leon’s extremely detailed line drawings. De Leon earned his BFA in Print Making from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1983, before establishing his studio in San Antonio. He has exhibited extensively across Texas and elsewhere in the United States, in individual and group exhibitions, and has also contributed design for film and television. De Leon has been awarded the London Studio Program grant and the International AIR Program grants from ArtPace: A Foundation for Contemporary Art, San Antonio.

Max Grundy “Antlophobia”

Max Grundy “Retro Futurism”

“The most effective images to motivate people and get a reaction are images of fear,” states painter, illustrator and graphic designer Max Grundy. Inspired by 1940’s and 1950’s B-movie, sci-fi and propaganda visuals, Grundy believes that the images of world destruction, alien invasion and communism which were predominate during the WW2 and post-war decades still have a huge influence on the phobias of contemporary society. His interest in vintage 40’s/50’s era poster design is major inspiration on his art. He admires its use of unusual perspective, limited color palette, dramatic text and design to create maximum effect. Flat shapes and clean design are conducive with the time period of influence.  He believes this style has the ability to reach out and grab a viewer because of its economical graphic quality. Grundy currently works with enamel on aluminum panel and feels this media is the most consistent with the subject matter. “We call this particular style retro futurism,” states Grundy. His works have been collected by the likes of Metallica’s James Hetfield, producer J.J. Abrams, Hell’s Angels founder Sonny Barger and “Overhauling” host Chris Jacobs. With a B.A. in Illustration and a Master’s degree in painting, drawing and art history, Grundy lives and works in Glendale California as a full time artist.

P.J. FIDLER“The Permutation Generator”

PJ Fidler’s “The Permutation Generator” reflects the concept of metamorphism – sacrificing what you are to become something else. The paintings focus on life, love, sex and death and how each of these experiences transform each one of us. Deeply influenced by his childhood surroundings in a small farm community in Central California, his art is an unfolding of nonlinear narratives.  Commonly comprised of animal imagery, landscapes and religious iconography, Fidler’s work reflects his love of Flemish paintings, vintage children’s books, and contemporary graphic design using mixed media on wood and canvas. The results, with their mixture of adolescent archetypes and the dark psychological aspects of the human condition, are often surreal, ambiguous, and yet very much familiar. Fidler studied illustration at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. www.pjfidler.com

“P.J. Fidler’s pieces are exercises in exuberance.  The macabre and the merry co-exist in a frenzy of color.  Such a treat.” — Pam Grossman, www.phantasmaphile.com

JASON HOUCHEN – “Fallen Trees Spread No Seeds”

Through his wood burnings, sculptures, mixed media and paintings, Jason Houchen fuses his Midwestern roots with his love of classical folk art, street art and pop surrealism. Spirits and spirituality, antiquity and memories freely flow from his extremely detailed works. “Fallen Trees Spread No Seeds” has a “how the west was stolen” theme, created with wood, a soldering iron, vintage cigar bands and stained glass. Describing himself as an “urban folk artist,” Houchen’s art is collected by artists and art dealers and can be found in the private collections of Liz McGrath, SHAG, Glenn Barr, Miles Thompson, Greg Escalante, Jan Corey Helford, Billy Shire and Annie Adjchavanich. Houchen received his BFA from the University of Missouri and is currently working on his masters and teaching in Illinois. www.jasonhouchen.com

MALLEUS
Malleus is an artistic and graphic rock-devoted power-trio from Italy that creates handmade limited edition silkscreened posters for the celebration of gigs and events.  Their work raises the visual side of Music to an Art level. The trio’s catalogue represents an ongoing study of the female form with roots in mythology, folklore, Renaissance, Symbolism, and Neoclassicism, continuing all the way up to the modern, postmodern and contemporary periods. The idea of the Muse, a central artistic concept as long as history has been history, is the fulcrum of Malleus’ poetics and aesthetics. Malleus’ creative process involves different instruments and methods, but the manual art gesture remains their main cardinal point. Malleus has created posters for bands such as: Aphex Twin, Beck, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Blue Cheer, Blues Explosion, Brant Bjork, the Chemical Brothers, the Cure, Current 93, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dresden Dolls, Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Mars Volta, Melvins, Motorpsycho, Monster Magnet, Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Nine Inch Nails, Om, The Prodigy, Sigur Ros, Queens of the Stone Age, Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Isis, Tool, Turbonegro, Ufomammut and many more. Malleus has been present in exhibitions from Atlanta to Philadelphia, from Roma to Rio de Janeiro, from Milano to Antwerpen. Several of their works are included in The Art of Modern Rock the gig poster bible by Paul Grushkin and Dennis King.

THE HAMMER OF GOD

Comments are written by artists, collectors and friends including Paul Grushkin and Dennis King (The Art of Rock and the Art of Modern Rock), Firehouse, David Tibet (Current 93), Jermaine Rogers, Alan Forbes, Justin Hampton, Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls), Al Cisneros (Om), Brant Bjork, and many more. “The Hammer of God” is published by Supernaturalcat, $33 Euro, soft-cover, 112 pages, 23 x 33 cm, ISBN: 978-88-903692-0-9

THE EVENT
Enjoy an enchanted evening with multi-media artist / sculptor Crazy Al Evans and his new limited edition ceramics, artist proofs, new art and special guests! This event celebrates the ten-year anniversary of Evans’ Tikis #11, 12 and 13. To commemorate these primordial sculptures in the Crazy AL Tiki Gallery, a new ceramic creation will be debuted at this event. A decanter  design of Tiki #12,”Hula Lover, will be sold in a numbered edition in the very room the same tiki was first presented to the public at the Copro/Nason Tiki Art Show of September 19, 1998. Sculpted by Evans to match the original in every detail, the piece is also proportional to its partner Tiki #13 mug. Evans will also introduce a candle-holder miniature of Tiki #11, “Tiki Lantern’” Limited sets of all three designs with be available as well. Evans has once again pushed the envelope and stretched his imagination with the introduction of Tiki #12, “Hula Lover Carafe,” which will hold a lightable tiki-torch just like the original! Evans continued to lead the way with more developments in his personal quest for originality. Be there for the re-lighting ceremony of Tiki #12 as Dancer Tahini ignites the celebration with the exotic music of the Tikiyaki Orchestra.

CRAZY AL EVANS
Crazy Al Evans is a Southern California based multi-media artist who has been carving, sculpting and painting tiki imagery since 1990. Nicknamed for his fun and enthusiastic antics, the name also suits him for his manic and detailed carving. Evans’ Polynesian Pop-inspired sculptures can be found from Hawaii to New York. Through his one-man company, Bone Productions, his limited-edition tiki-inspired resins and mugs can be found worldwide. Paying tribute to the original Polynesian artisans from the South Pacific as well as majestic cultural icons of primitive cultures, Evans brands his art with unique craftsmanship and extreme attention to detail, giving each one of his creations meaning and importance and avoiding the use of cartoon imagery and bright colors. His palm sculpts, velvet paintings, dioramas, hardwood carvings, utilitarian objects (such as lamps and cabinets) and environmental installations are an exciting mix of authentic design and modern concepts.

Born in 1967, Evans grew up in the Scottsdale area of Phoenix, AZ surrounded by the ever-present Polynesian-Pop of the era, and claims his dad’s collection of Native American art, namely Hopi Kachina Dolls, as a major inspiration on his own art.  Greatly inspired by the primitive arts, his tiki sculptures always have a specific propose by paying tribute to a particular person, thing, event or activity.
Evans graduated from the prestigious Art Center College of Design, but is self-taught in the art of carving. He works almost exclusively with palm wood, using each dramatically different layer to help create the complexities in his designs. Exalting the once living tree, Evans leaves the bark on his finished piece. The manipulation of its complex texture gives even more depth and detail to each sculpture. Since 1996, Evans has carved around 150 tikis each assigned a number. In 2004, Evans began making limited mugs in his “Crazy Al Tiki Gallery Line of Ceramic Editions” for which he sculpts exact replicas of his large tikis in miniature.
Evans is also the front man of the band Ape who perform a rousing set of classic Hawaiian sounds using steel guitars and ukulele with guitars, bass and drums. During their enchanting sets, Evans plays percussion with an axe and a log, carving a tiki in the process! Of course the tikis carved during Ape’s set look much simpler than the works that take him 45-100 hours from start to finish. However, these sculpts created in as little as 45 minutes contain the energies of the event from which they were created; they have an individual striking presence all their own.

Crazy Al Evans also does commercial work, sculpting toys for Warner Brothers, Disney, Lucas/Star Wars as well as installations for several establishments such as The Tahiti Restaurant in Hollywood, Kona Club in Oakland, Ka Hale Tiki in Georgia, Lucky Tiki Bar in Los Angeles, Bigfoot Lodge in San Francisco and the Puka Bar in Long Beach. Crazy Al Evans has recently been spotlighted carving tikis on the Discovery Channel ’s “Dude Room ” and the TV Guide Channel ’s “Ready Set Change” as well as many You-Tube videos, and has worked in charity raising money for Hurricane Katrina victims, National Stroke Association and the Honolulu Marathon. Evans currently resides in Sunset Beach, California.
